An optional extra for the broader among us, this zip-in expansion gusset adds an extra 25 centimetres in diameter at the shoulder of One Planet bags, tapering to nothing at the end of the side zip of the main bag. Available to fit every model and size perfectly, it is filled to match the warmth of the bag it will accompany. (Not available for the Booster, Cocoon or Stowaway.) Made of 40 denier V2 fabric, it is a simple, clever way of adding some wriggle room to your nighttime attire.
All our synthetic sleeping bags use X-Static® fibre as their first insulation layer, trapping warm air close to the body. This high-tech fill is made up of polyester short-staple fibre - short strands of high-denier filaments, making the bag soft, flexible and compressible - which has been completely and permanently coated with pure silver. This coating gives the fibre many naturally occurring properties. In cold temperatures, most heat loss occurs through radiation; however, the silver coating reflects heat back from the fibre into the bag. Silver also reduces odour for two reasons: it is antimicrobial, so it makes your bag less attractive to micro-organisms which might otherwise make it their smelly home; and it neutralises ammonia and denatured proteins, two principle causes of stink. Silver also has anti-static properties, eliminating the static cling that can occur with other bags. For more information, visit www.x-staticfiber.com
Suspension system
Our warmer bags use an innovative and unique suspension system to increase thermal efficiency without weight and bulk. The system consists of three layers, varying in thickness in different models.
• Internal layer of X-static® fibre reflects radiant heat and reduces odour. • Suspension mid layer: this lattice of loosely woven tubes of fibre traps pockets of warm air between the inner and outer layers. • Outer thermal barrier suspended by the mid layer.
All One Planet down sleeping bags (except the Booster Bag series) use sewn-off box wall baffles made from Baffletex, a lightweight mesh fabric that is extremely strong for its weight. Baffletex is air-permeable, with a one-way stretch knit that serves a number of purposes. The one-way stretch allows fill material to loft to its full potential, without leaving gaps. It also acts as a shock absorber within the bag, preventing damage from baffle blow-out, while the texture of the mesh 'grabs' the fill material and minimises shifting.
Sleeping bag fabric must perform a number of roles: keep the fill in the bag; allow body generated moisture to get out; and the shell fabric must also keep external moisture out in some conditions.
Fabrics that are ‘downproof by construction’ are ideal as they don’t use coatings which can reduce breathability: instead, the very tight weave prevents down from escaping.
Vapour Vent (V2)
Vapour Vent (V2) is used as the inner in all One Planet sleeping bags and as the shell for most. This durable, tightly-woven fabric is ‘downproof by construction’: the weave is so tight down cannot escape through the cloth. Coatings are not required, so body vapour can vent through the fabric more effectively, reducing moisture build-up in the down and allowing it to loft to its full potential. We use three weights of the silky V2 fabric, differentiated by their denier. (The fineness of thread is measured in denier: the finer the thread, the lower the denier and the lighter, more silky and expensive the fabric.)
V2-15 An ultralight, sexy, 15-denier nylon used to make light, high-performance bags. Used on our Booster, Cocoon, Stowaway, and Zephyr bags, as well as the inner on the Bush Lite and Winter Lite, it offers the ultimate in luxury and warmth-to-weight ratios.
V2-30 This 30 denier nylon makes a good, all-round shell. It is used as the inner and outer fabric on the Bungle and Robin Hoodless, while a non-downproof version of V2-30 is used in our synthetic range.
V2-50 This 50-denier polyester fabric is slightly heavier and more robust, perfect for making tough, reliable sleeping bags such as the Camp Lite.
Pertex® Endurance
The Winter Lite and Bush Lite are designed for extreme conditions, so we have chosen their shell fabric accordingly. Pertex® Endurance is the lightest, most breathable and weather-resistant fabric we can find. It weighs a measly 36 g/m2, has a water head of 1000 millimetres and a breathability of 7000 g/m2/24 hours (according to results from test JIS L 1099 A-1). You do the comparisons: it’s hard to beat! The fabric combines an air-permeable membrane with a durable nylon face fabric: the membrane is so thin it barely affects the weight or softness of the material, but it is highly breathable and water and wind resistant.
To keep it simple, here’s a guide to One Planet references.
Loft: a measure of how efficiently the down traps air. The higher the loft, the ‘fluffier’ the down and the better the insulating power.
Composition: the ratio of down to feather in a bag, given as a percentage. For example, 90 per cent down, ten per cent feather.
Species: goose down generally achieves better loft than duck, with the best down coming from mature, free-range birds from extremely cold climates.
The quality of down in a sleeping bag makes a huge difference to the performance of the bag, in terms of warmth, weight, durability and compactness. However, often there is very little information provided about a bag’s fill, making it very hard to compare.
All down used in One Planet products is independently tested by the IDFL (International Down and Feather Laboratory and Institute) for loft, composition, species and cleanliness. Our test results are accurately recorded on the quality label inside the foot of each sleeping bag. (Please note: traces of down and or feather of different species and colour than that noted on the bag may occur.)
One Planet sleeping bags use four qualities of down.
Duck – 700+ loft 700 loft (in³/oz US) or 380 (cm³/g EU) Our best value down. Used for applications where minimum weight and packed size is not critical.
Duck – 750+ loft 750 loft (in³/oz US) or 414 (cm³/g EU) This down has excellent compactability and loft recovery, with a long user life.
Goose – 800+ loft 800 loft (in³/oz US) or 424 (cm³/g EU) Same characteristics as the 750 loft duck down, just a little better and a little more expensive.
Goose – 850+ loft 850+ loft (in³/oz US) or 447 (cm³/g EU) Very extravagant! Used in our Customline bags.
Fill ratio
Most people move in their sleep, so loading the top of the bag with lots of extra down isn’t necessarily effective. We use a fill ratio of approximately 55/45, with 55 per cent of the fill in the top of the bag where it provides maximum warmth.
Filled to order
One Planet sleeping bags are hand-filled, to order, in our Melbourne factory. This dramatically reduces the time a bag is spent compressed in its stuff sack.
